Did you guess the difference between the previous ways to say hello?

Let´s read their meanings and other greetings for saying hello in the next paragraphs.

Hello, Hallo and Hullo

These are used as greetings when you meet someone, or when you start a telephone conversation. We say hello especially when we are talking to people we do not know well, or to older people.

Hello, Mrs Watson.

Hi

Hi is used as a friendly greeting when you meet somebodystart a telephone conversation, or at the begining of an informal email.

Hi Matt! I haven't since you for ages.

Hi there!

Good morning/afternoon/evening

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening are polite ways to greet someone in the morning, afternoon and evening, respectively. People say just morning, afternoon and evening to greet people in an informal way.

Good morning, class.

Good afternoon.

Evening. Where are you off?

Hey, Oi and Oy

All of them are used to get someone's attention in an not very polite way, but also as greetings. The first one is used by North American people; while the last two, by the Brits and Australians. Choose your favorite.

Hey Sally! How you doing?

Oi Matt!

How are you? ,   How are things?  and   How is it going?

Use these informal expressions when you are greeting someone and starting a conversation.

How is it going, Jane? Long time no see you.

Alright?

Yeah. It's writen as a word -not all right-. It is used as an informal greeting by British, especially by Londoners. You can respond this British expression by saying either alright? or alright.

Alright love?

How do you do?

This one is a formal greeting for somebody that you have not met before. Use it the first time peolpe tell you their name.

How do you do? I'm Ann Smith.

I'm sure you have your own particular way to say hello. So, I challenge you to use one of the others. Do you accept the challenge?
